Plans are already in place for the forthcoming NWBC
Baseball Convention which will again be held at the
Embassy Suites PDX from January 14-16, 2011. The
annual NW Baseball convention brings together coaches from all
levels in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.. This year, a special
invitation has gone out to our Canadian neighbors in the B.C.
area as well.. The convention, as you know, although focused
directly to the high school coach has annually attracted a
majority of the college coaches who either attend or
participate as invited clinicians.. A special Sunday session is
planned for the many volunteer coaches who coach in the summer
and work with younger youth. These specific coaches, parents,
etc represent various communities throughout the region.

CALIFORNIA WINTER LEAGUE!!!
www.CaliforniaWinterLeague.com
The CWL is an instructional winter league intended to
provide players with Major League instruction, the
opportunity to play live games in So. Cal (Palm
Springs, CA) during the winter, and the opportunity
to play in front of pro scouts and coaches for a
month. There will be players signed to pro contracts
directly from this league. Housing, equipment, food,
local transportation, and a gym membership are also
included with this opportunity.
This will be a great opportunity for SCOUTS as well.
There will be many talented athletes that may have
been overlooked, injured in the past, or from
unpopular areas of the country that will be out to
compete. The league will offer very competitive play
with players ranging from current and ex-minor
leaguers, current and ex-independent players, and
ex-college players who still feel they deserve a
shot. Everyone will be out for the opportunity to
take a step up and improve themselves as baseball
players. Take a look at the web site
www.CaliforniaWinterLeague.com for more details and
information as well as contact information. |

DID YOU KNOW>>>Metal
Bat rolling is a process that can add incredible pop
and distance to any baseball bat.
Everyone knows that bats get hotter after about
500-800 hits. The trouble is, by the time you have
put that many hits on the bat it is well on it’s way
to being worn out. By rolling your bat you can enjoy
the bat’s maximum potential from the very first swing
without putting all the wear and tear on it.
Just Google "bat rolling" see what's happening.
Do you want to play metal or Wood?

Community sports: Lampkin looking to score some
funding
.By Paul Danzer
Columbian Staff Writer
Monday, December 21, 2009
Tradition says a column suggesting gift ideas would
be appropriate this week.
Because I know readers of this column are smart and
have completed their holiday shopping well before
today, I will instead look ahead to several projects
in the works for our community in the coming year.
Let’s start with a party.
Tom Lampkin, the retired major league catcher who
coaches Union High School baseball, is working to
secure scoreboards for all of the varsity baseball
and softball diamonds at the high schools of
Evergreen Public Schools.
To do that, he has revived a popular event of a few
years back.
The 2010 Western Night with the Stars will be held on
Jan. 23 at the Clark County Fairgrounds to raise
funds for the Clark County Youth Sports Foundation, a
not-for-profit Lampkin helped found in 2003.
The foundation staged successful Western-themed
dinner and auction events in 2003 and 2004. Money
raised during those events funded grants that
assisted some 30 Clark County organizations involved
with youth sports.
The foundation’s mission is to assist sports programs
with facility and equipment improvements that make
programs safer and more fun for kids.
After a less successful event in 2005, the CCYSF
decided to take a break from fundraising projects.
The decision to try again started with Lampkin’s
desire to use some CCYSF funds to help improve the
drainage at several area high school baseball
diamonds — including Union’s. When Lampkin learned
that the Union project was covered by the school
district’s long-range plan (and scheduled to be
complete in time for the coming season) the
foundation’s board of directors turned to the idea of
adding scoreboards at high school diamonds.
Lampkin hopes to clear the $80,000 needed to install
eight scoreboards. He said the scoreboards will
benefit youth teams as well as the high school
programs, noting that club teams use the high school
fields.
The CCYSF has lined up a band, an emcee, and a
variety of auction items. As was the case at past
parties, Lampkin has invited some of his baseball
pals to appear — though he’s not ready to name names.
To learn more, or to buy a $55 ticket, visit the
Clark County Youth Sports Foundation at www.ccysf.org.

Portland, OR
North to Seattle for the 2009 4th of July Tournament. We
enjoyed a very long but competitive weekend of baseball. We
were fortunate to have some very good pitching performances,
recording the only two shutouts of the tournament one of our
pitchers who played at Concordia chewed up a lot of innings for
us. We qualified for Sunday play as the #2 seed in our bracket
going 4-1 in pool play losing only our opener to the Mariners
who also went 4-1 in pool play taking the #1 seed from our
bracket by virtue of their Thursday win over us. Our semi
final game on Sunday was pretty intense. We had a squad of only
9 very tired guys and had to play the #1 seed from the other
bracket. We played a near flawless game taking a 2-0 lead
against a fresh and very dominant pitcher. We got 5 solid
innings from the Angels Jason Daily and brought in the kid
from Concordia to close the 6th and 7th. He walks the leadoff
hitter, give up a single and a 3 run bomb in the bottom of
the 6th. We were down to our final 3 outs after playing so
hard. We found a way to scratch out 3 runs in the top of the
7th and then shut the door in the bottom half to advance to the
championship game.
The Astros as the #2 seed upset the Mariners, which was a
little disappointing to us as we really wanted a shot at a
rematch with the M's. At this point we have the same 9 guys
only more tired and worn out. We lead the championship game
most of the way and lose the lead on a suicide squeeze in the
6th. The game stayed tied at 4, when in the bottom of the 8th
we try a steal of home with our leadoff guy. He is thrown out
at the plate in a bang/bang play. We finally surrender a run in
the 11th and leave the bases loaded in the bottom half of the
11th, missing the title by 90 feet. We didn't leave Seattle
last night until about 5:30. Needless to say we're very tired
today but I think better for the experience.
Mike
Hi Mike,
Congratulations to you and all of the players. Thank you form

The Portland Beavers do not offer open tryouts for
the team. As an affiliated professional baseball
team, the Beavers have a player development agreement
with a team from Major League Baseball (San Diego
Padres). As such, all Beavers players are scouted,
recruited and signed to contracts by the Padres, and
then assigned to play in Portland.
Each season, the Padres conduct an open player tryout
at PGE Park (usually in June). The tryout is not to
recruit players to play for the Beavers, rather it is
an opportunity for scouts to identify players they
may want to sign at a later date to potentially play
in the Padres minor league system.
The
2009 tryout will be held at PGE Park on June 26.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. The tryout is open to
players between the ages of 16 and 22 who were not
drafted in the June draft. The tryout is free with no
registration or tryout fees involved. Players
participating in American Legion summer baseball must
have a permission slip signed by a head coach or
commander of the Legion post the player represents.
All players under the age of 18 must supply a waiver
signed by a parent or legal guardian. The Padres and
Beavers supply baseballs, batting helmets, wood bats
and one set of catching gear. Participants are
encouraged to bring their own wood bat, but no metal
bats, and must supply all other playing equipment.
All participants must sign a waiver before taking
part in the Padres tryout.
Click here for a pdf release form.
The Major League Scouting Bureau conducts tryout
camps around the country and can be reached at (909)
980-1881 for tryout information. |

The
Northwest Independent
Baseball League
teams are dedicated to helping take
the level of play to new heights. To this end, the
League coaches and players will conduct
clinics and seminars for youth players that will
help build on the baseball foundations that they’re
developing and give them the athletic and
sportsmanship skills that will help carry them to
the next level of competition.
Whether it’s helping to improve the facilities in
the area, or the building on the skills of local
players, the NWIBL is intent on proving that
baseball is more than just a spectator sport. Fans of all types
are welcome and encouraged to come cheer on teams in the
